What is EMDR Therapy?

THE BRAIN HAS A NATURAL HEALING PROCESS. You can literally reprogram your brain. ISN'T THAT FACINATING?

EMDR is not only evidence-based and backed by tons of research and testing (more than 3 decades, to be exact), but it’s also recognized internationally as a beneficial treatment to heal the brain from the lingering effects of distress. Essentially it is an interactive therapy technique that works with eye movements (bilateral stimulation) to relieve psychological stress.

While it originally was used to treat trauma, it has evolved a lot over the years to help more people with various challenges. The part that most clients are excited about is that they don’t have to talk about painful memories in detail to receive benefits from the treatment. And you don’t have to feel ashamed or like there’s something wrong with you for not being someone who talks about feelings.  You’re not alone in any of that.

There are so many mental health challenges and conditions that EMDR Therapy can treat. Some of the most common ones include:

What are the 8 Phases of EMDR Therapy?

EMDR Counseling in Arlington, Southlake, and Teletherapy for Texas Residents

The wonderful thing about EMDR therapy is that it is highly structured. Our therapists have years of experience with EMDR and will guide the process and follow your lead on your pace and comfort level. So you’re wondering what to expect with these 8 phases?

This phase will include a discussion of the specific problem that brought you into EMDR therapy, identify both positive and negative targets, determine if EMDR is the best solution, and develop a treatment plan.

It’s important to us to keep you informed on every step of the process.

In this phase, the therapist will prepare you for memory processing as well as stabilizing and increasing access to positive states.  A significant goal of this phase is to establish a trusting relationship between you and your therapist.

In this phase, you and your therapist will identify the target memory for the session. You’ll identify images, beliefs, sensations, and feelings.

In this phase, you will begin the reprocessing and desensitization of the disturbing memory until it is neutralized and allowing new thoughts, images, feelings, and sensations to emerge. You will still remember the incident, but it will no longer cause you distress.

In this phase you will focus on strengthening a positive belief and continue working on it until it feels true. The goal is to strengthen of the positive response to replace the negative response.

After the positive response has been strengthened and it feels true, you will then be asked to scan the entire body from head to toe holding the positive response. Any lingering negative response will be worked on and reprocessed.

During the closure phase, the therapist will guide you to a state of calm and ensure that you leave feeling better than you arrived (even if there is further reprocessing to do).

During the reevaluation phase, you will review the results and treatment with your therapist to guage that distress is low and positive cognition is strong.

Reevaluation is vital in order to determine the success of the treatment over time. Any future targets and direction for continued treatment are determined during this phase.

EMDR therapy is not complete until attention has been brought to the past memories contributing to the problem, the disturbing present situations, and what skills the client may need for the future.

It truly doesn't have to be that way. You deserve help as much as anyone else.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO THROUGH IT ALL ALONE.

Help is available. You matter. Your life matters. And you have so many people who care about you. You’re not a burden by reaching out for help. You deserve support and help just as much as anyone else.  Solutions are available to help improve your mental health and well-being. Talking with a therapist can help you to move through your challenges and concerns and improve your mental health and wellness one session at a time.
